SZYK [Pronounced Shick]: A Linguistically Daunting Surname
Your friends may tell you that they are not familiar with Arthur Szyk. They may wonder how to pronounce his name. It is Shick. But chances are that your friends will recognize at least a few of Szyk's brilliant works of art. Here are several samples, which are representative of his prodigious talent. Those of you who collect Americana may have first discovered Szyk's patriotic series Washington and His Times hanging in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, NY. Who recalls that the U.S. Congress awarded Szyk the George Washington Bicentennial Medal? Or, that the paintings were exhibited in the Library of Congress and then the White House up to 1941?
