    Organizational History
The Arthur Szyk Society was founded in 1991 in Orange County, California and received its 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status in 1994. Founder George Gooche, a retired medical administrator, discovered a veritable treasure trove of Szyk's art works, which had been in storage for more than 40 years. He then published theme-oriented Society newsletters pertaining to these works and his related research. Under his direction, The Society published newsletters and contributed to the 1991 exhibition, Arthur Szyk: Illuminator, at Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles, the first Szyk exhibition of the 1990s.

In 1997, The Society relocated to Burlingame, California in the San Francisco Bay Area, where a new Board of Trustees was formed under the leadership of Irvin D. Ungar, a rabbi, curator and antiquarian. With its relocation, The Society expanded its outreach, programs and mission including the launch of a traveling exhibitions program, a web site, a newly designed membership newsletter and other publications, and a public lecture series called "An Evening with Arthur Szyk." During this phase, national and international exposure expanded, membership increased, and an Honorary Board was established. In addition, The Society created web site and database links with several universities, and forged new alliances with literary and art history societies.
